Discussion and further information

  • Indiana University staff describe initiatives taken at grass-roots and policy making levels to develop responsible environmental stewardship across the institution.
  • JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee), whose brief includes inspiring UK colleges and universities in the innovative use of digital technologies, outlines issues and facts around sustainable ICT in education in a briefing paper which includes very useful suggestions in its call to action.

New Zealand has invested much time and effort in producing reports on the status of e-learning without always addressing the carbon footprint issue. Interestingly, while the New Zealand Ministry of Education's e-learning Action Plan for Schools 2006-2010 is forward looking in some aspects - "ICT policy in education needs to support increased innovation and cultural change so that we can transform the ways students learn in our emerging knowledge society" (The Ministry of Education, 2006, p. 8) - there is no mention in the document of the environmental impact of ICT in education.
