Kia ora koutou katoa
Naumai, haere mai ki te Kura Tuatahi - Akonga Aka Mariko. Welcome to the VLN Primary School
Our goal is to:
Create Connected, Passionate, Purposeful Learners
Our online programmes and projects are now underway and we can catch our breath after a hectic start to our first semester. This is a bumper newsletter as it also includes last month's newsletter that we were too busy to get out! Please take the time to read through and find out about the opportunities for our learners and our schools.
We headline this month's newsletter with a short video from AirNZ and Halfmoon Bay student Nate. Nate talks about the AirNZ Airpoints programme, and how it helped our Rural & Remote students get to Wellington last year for their camp. Nate, now Year 9, is a talented videographer and much of the AirNZ video is Nate's own work.
We welcome three more new teachers to the VLN Primary. Whaea Ngawai will be working alongside Koka Jules. Between them they teach 25 te reo Māori classes! The demand for te reo Māori continues to grow & we are very lucky to have these two skilled and knowledgeable kaiako working with our tamariki. Madlen is our go-to person for elearning support & also teaches our Extension Spanish class. Madlen only has 10 hours a week, but between us we will do our best to make sure our teachers and learners get the support they need. I am working hard to find funding to get more hours for this much needed position. Finally a big welcome to Gayleen who is covering for Sofie's French & Spanish classes while she is on maternity leave.
It's not too for putting in late enrolments, and information is here on how to do this, but you really need to do this within the next week or two for individuals or small groups of students. If you want to enrol whole classes this can happen at anytime of the year. Over the Back Fence also welcome schools to join in at any time.
We are very proud to have gained the support of the Korean Education Centre for our Korean classes. We are offering free Korean five week taster classes, and longer term tuition at half our normal registration. There are no VLN Primary membership fees for schools participating in their first taster class. This is a great opportunity to learn about Korean language and culture with your class (any age/year group welcome) and to see what it's like to learn in our online classes.
Our AGM is coming up on the 3rd of May and we ask that you mark this in your diary and come along to support. The VLN Primary is a charitable trust and all participating schools are members. We welcome new trustees so please consider who in your community you could shoulder tap to put themselves forward for this important governance role.
FLANZ conference is coming up in April and part of this is a mini-conference for teachers. There are world class speakers in the field of online learning, so if you are in the lower North Island I would recommend this as valuable PLD. The VLN Primary is an affiliate memberof FLANZ (Flexible Learning Association of New Zealand).
A big shout out to Te Papa for coming back into the virtual learning world & offering virtual excursions to their exhibitions. Check out what they have to offer schools. An item of interest to all our schools who want to get their children 'Growing', from the Food & Soil Society, a competition for students, and access to teachers for open learning resources. Finally Sitech have a special offer, for VLN Primary schools only, on webconferencing equipment that would improve the experience of children who are learning in large groups or whole classes.
