Why bother with Universal Design for eLearning?

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) offers a way of looking at learning...and the design of learning experiences...that makes us really think about the people involved. We are all different, and while neuroscience will tell us that there are some similarities with the actual 'nuts and bolts' of cognitive development, the actual process that leads to 'learning' differs from person to person.

I find UDL invaluable for thinking about the 'how', 'what', and 'why', especially when designing eLearning experiences. It stops me getting carried away with some of the amazing bells and whistles we can create, and starts me thinking about the flow of the learning - about how I can build in choice and multiple pathways - and really starting considering requirements around access and accessibility.

The truly awesome Chrissie Butler, recommends that "to get some clarity on the impact of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in another part of the world, take a look at phase 1 of British Columbia's new website on UDL. Chrissie also suggests that if you want to dig deeper you could work your way through this Self-directed course.

@Pascale - thank you so much for popping across and sharing this inspirational video. The fact that Musharaf is truly empowered - to the point where he develops the confidence to speak in front of the rest of the school, is a testament to his own strength of character, as well as to caring teachers.

Wow! (and yes, I did have the tissues out; and yes, they were pretty soggy by the time I finished watching).
